Summer Time and Chistmas Holiday Fun!

Hey Ya'll!

I'm back again!
It's been a fairly hectic year, but now I have finished the second year of my course and I am fully ready for the holidays and perhaps a nice tan in the Summer sun!

I have found it a bit tricky to update all three websites (DeviantART, Tumblr and here) on a weekly basis while I was so busy, but now I feel that I am able to continue with the regular schedule. :)

(Also, if you ever feel the need to check out my art on a more regular basis my Tumblr and DeviantART accounts are there for you guys to check out.)

Here are the things that I have been doing in the mean time:

Thanks for reading guys! Until next time :)

Photostudy Jellyfish

Just as the title suggest- a photostudy of some Jellyfish. This was a little different to what I usually draw so I thought I would give it a go. I apologise for the short update this week, but I've got my relatives all up this week and weekend so it makes for a very very busy time (but a lot of fun though)!

That's all for now! Thanks a lot for reading :)

Animated Icons

Two little avatars that I made yesterday :) I decided to give pixel art a try as I have never tried it and it looks like a lot of fun. I then decided that I also wanted to try some animation on Photoshop CS5 for the first time as well and this was the result!

I decided to go with a Portal theme because they are recognisable and fun to draw. I just sort of guessed my way through this, but it seems to have worked without too many issues so that's good I think.

I may do more if I think of other things to animate and pixelate. :)

That's all for now and thanks for reading! :)

Armageddon Post

Hey all out there! This was the picture that I drew as a sort of demonstration thing over the long weekend. I was there on the Saturday and then I came back on the Monday with my sister to have another look at the goodies that were available. I spent way too much money, but I did get a lot of cool stuff which was really good!

It was a lot of fun drawing this and talking to people about drawing and that sort of thing, though it was a little bit scary at first I sort of got used to it after a few hours. Oh and my favourite part of the weekend was when one guy was saying to his friends that the only reason my picture looked good was because I was using a large tablet- but when one of his friends actually had a look he saw that I was using a very small Wacom Bamboo and then his friends mocked him and laughed at him and it made me crack up laughing so much.

So a good weekend was hopefully had by all!

Right! That's all for now! Thanks for reading :)

Rock Gollum

Done entirely on Photoshop CS5 (as most of my images are these days), this guy was started with a silhouette. I then added varying tonal values, then added colour layers on top. I spent quite a while fiddling around with his colours to get them how I liked, but I don't think the end result is too bad. :)

There should be posters available at the Animation College NZ stall this Labour weekend of him- so if you're interested and going this weekend you should pop around and say 'hi' to all students that are working there! I will be going on the Saturday so if anyone is floating around then it would be awesome to hear from you guys!

Anyway, that's all for now!

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you again soon :)

Entries and a quick 'how-to'

Two recent pictures that I drew- the top one was A3 traditional (done with blue pencil then outlined in fibre tip pen) and the bottom picture was drawn entirely digitally (CS5). Below is a very rough tutorial that explains the process I used for the guy at the bottom for anyone that is interested. (I do hope that it's big enough!)

Also, as explained I know it's not the best tutorial/ right way to do things, but I just thought if it could possibly help people even a bit, well then it's worth it, right?

Just my logic anyway :)

Four Planets

My last picture from the concept design workshop a set of four different 'planets' or environments. I drew this picture when Robh Ruppel was speaking to us about the way he paints environments and I feel that I gained a lot from listening to him speak and show the way that he worked.

Overall, I found the workshop a really useful thing for me to go to (for those that haven't read any of my previous posts, I was fortunate enough to attend a Concept Design Workshop in Wellington in September) and I felt that I learned a lot, and it gave me the confidence to find my own way of doings things without worrying too much about linear paths in order to get to the job that I want.

It showed me that everyone had a different way of getting into the industry, but the thing that everyone had in common was that they all worked damn hard, and so I am trying to push myself even more now- trying to learn new programmes, techniques and different ways of approaching things in order to further myself as an artist.

So, it was a very good time for me I feel. And even though self doubt is always there, I feel like it's a natural part of it now- so it's not something to be afraid of. It helps me to push myself more and keep striving to be better!

Well, that's all for now!

Thanks for reading,

Hope to see you back soon! :)

Earring crafts

These are a set of earrings that I made during the holidays just past- I was getting a bit bored with the ones I had so I felt that it would be good (and productive) to make some of my own.

I used 'Super Sculpy' for all of the main models and just 'eye-balled' the proportions for them, and once they were finished (and properly baked) I painted them with standard acrylic paints and then sprayed them with a waterproof resin spray to help seal them!

I made the pokeballs first, then the companion cubes, Aang and then finally the Master Sword and Shield. I would have to find another way to make the shield and sword next time because they were so fiddly and time consuming... And tiny! The shield is about the size of my thumb nail (or just marginally bigger) so things got pretty hard to paint/ etc later on.

I really enjoy making these however and coming up with ideas of what to do next! And it's always fun to have some geeky stuff to wear subtly around the place. And it's neat when other people recognise what it's from! :)

Hey there everybody!

Just letting you all know that I will be updating my blog some more tomorrow as I have quite a lot of stuff that I need to post here. So, check back soon for new pictures and various other things! :)

Thanks for reading; that's all until tomorrow!

Day Five

So this was the last official picture I did for the workshop :) I did another picture on the following day with Robh Ruppel but I didn't finish it, so I didn't think there was much point putting it up here.
I will write up about it soon- including some awesome advice that I picked up from the various artists at the workshop. Very exciting stuff! :)

Day three and four!

Day three and four of the workshop- and here is what I've been up to!

Tuesday 4 September 2012

Yo! Concept Art Stuff- Day One and Two

As it turns out I do have internet! SO I am updating after each day. I'm pretty tired now (days start at 9am and finish at 7pm) so I won't ramble on too long (for once :P).
Day One Alien Samurai Bust
Day One Alien Spider

Day Two Rat Dragon Catfish Alien Dude

Looking forward to tomorrow! Hopefully I can finish off more than one picture tomorrow so I can stick it up here as well.

That's all for now, and thanks for stopping by! :)

Update Lite

Just going to be a very brief update this week (unfortunately). Because although I had a lot of things planned and ALMOST ready to go, I didn't have the time to finish them off while packing/ sorting everything out for the Wellington trip tomorrow. SO. When I get back there will be a whole heap of updates, but it will probably be pretty quiet for the next little while.

Mega excited for the workshop. I will share all the information/ drawings I do when I get back :)

Thanks for stopping by! :)

Stomp the Uni

A picture of a friends Neopet design that she asked for. I don't play Neopets anymore but when I was younger I used to be completely obsessed with it. It was rather unhealthy of me...

BUT I digress! It's good when I complete drawings. I just need to start putting more backgrounds into things.

Done in Photoshop over several hours.

Friday 17 August 2012

It's Friday!!

It's Friday! And I've been sick most of this week. Silly winter bugs... But anyway!
Did this guy today. I spent ages working on another piece but I didn't really plan it very well to begin with so it ended up looking pretty bad.

SO I decided I would start on this one instead. I now realise there are a lot of mistakes with perspective and such. (And he looks like he has a wonky leg...)

But I will try and get it right next time. I now also realise I need to do weapon studies, and I am terrible and have no clue what weapons actually look like. So, it's been a good learning day all around for me! Despite all this, I still kinda like this guy with his dreads.

That's all for now!

Catch you later, and thanks for reading :)

Leopard Study

Just another photo study- this time of a super cute little feline! Not much else to say apart from that :)

Speed painting and new accounts

Two posts in as many days? Well, I'll be darned!

Another speed paint! This time it's another landscape and it's of the Rice Terraces in Banaue (I assume that's spelt correctly). I've never been here but that's one of the wonders of the internet isn't it?

I discovered it while I was trundling through Tumblr yesterday, so I figured I may as well go and paint the thing.

As you have probably gathered, (nice segue there right?) I have just set up a Tumblr account. So why not take a peak? It's brand new at the moment but I guarantee more stuff is coming soon :).

Well thanks for reading everyone, catch you later! :)

Focusing and studies

I apologise for the lack of updates lately! Time is just really getting away from me at the moment what with projects and the sort to finish off.

OK! Well, today I thought I would knuckle down and do a drawing study. I didn't want to spend too long on it, as it is only a study (which is why this isn't finished), but it turned out better than I was expecting.

I'm really trying to improve my drawing skills as I have decided that I really do want to be involved with concept art (hopefully involving games), so I'm trying to work on the foundations (and actually seeing what things look like- rather than just charging in and not really knowing where things go/ how things are proportioned), so I thought people were a good place to start. It is a little daunting seeing my skill level and where it is at the moment, and then thinking about where it needs to be to become professional. I know I need to improve a lot but sometimes it's a bit difficult to know where to begin...
Practice, practice, practice I suppose! I just need to practice a bit of everything now :)

Well, got to get onto more drawing. That's all for now, and thanks for reading!

Over and out! :)

Tuesday 31 July 2012

And finally some actual animation!

It's only just occurred to me that I haven't actually put much animation up here at all, so I thought I would upload my latest completed project- a box push. The background is very simple as I was purely concentrating on the animation.

We were instructed to animate a push/ pull/ or weight lift of some sort, so I decided to go with the idea of this little dude pushing a massive box up a ramp. But alas, it's not worth the effort! Anyway, enjoy and leave a comment/ critique if you feel like it. :)

Technical stuff: Maya 2012, using the Buckid Rig.

Wolf Study

My tonal version and colour of a wolf study that I did today. From a photo reference :). I haven't really done this using this technique before so it was all a bit of a learning curve. I really enjoy doing this sort of thing and I like feeling as if I've learnt something when I finish a drawing.

Life Drawing

Just a quick update with some life drawing sketches that I've done recently (the ones that I am happiest with). The top was done with charcoal the others are done with a standard pencil. And all the drawings had different lengths of time, though I can't remember exactly what was what.

Modelled Creature

Here is my Alien creature modelled from my concepts- now with it's own turn-around!
I had almost finished texturing the model when the programme crashed and I lost the save file, and unfortunately I did not have the time to texture it before submitting it. So, instead I loaded a previous file and posed it instead. I would like to redo the textures again when I find some time, but for now this is what I've got.

Saturday 21 July 2012

Creature Creation

We had to create our own Alien creatures with a cybernetic suit and that had elements from several different animals. So I begun with some basic sketches to generate some ideas and I also did some animal studies (below).

And some gun studies above (just drawn from pictures of already existing guns for reference and ideas as I actually don't have a clue about what guns, of any sort of variation, look like).
Better put together concept page. I like this better than the last one I did and there are more this time. Hoorah!
My two favourite designs, but I eventually decided to go with the design on the right because I felt it worked better than Mr. Goat Man.
Just a turn around of my design! I have drawn his arms in the side view, but I haven't put that in in this version. But they do exist!

And I have just about completed modelling this guy, and I have begun to texture him in Mudbox (although I've been finding that it seems a bit of a fickle programme sometimes...) but still, it is good fun to use and hopefully I can get a nice model which looks like my design completed soon!

Thursday 5 July 2012

Island Time

Ok! So, there will be no update next week as I am going to Niue for a week. Hopefully there will be better weather there than in New Zealand and warmer too.

So in the mean time I made this picture. Hooray for nice tropical colours! And I will update when I return and have some nice new work to put up :)

Monday 2 July 2012

Coloured Drawings and Art Blocks

Just the black and white concepts from before but now with colour! Hooray!
Hmm... I like them individually, but the colours don't really work together all that well. I may have to change this later because it's kinda bugging me :I

I've been having a bit of an art block recently (which is frustrating because now I actually have some free time my brain/ hand is making all my drawings look poo). So hopefully I will come out the other side soon and make some good looking pictures. I want to do some full scenes because they're a lot more rewarding (and usually interesting to look at). And challenging. Good old challenges!

Well, that's all for now!
